THE CHANNEL, THE RUIN, THE ATLANTIC
ARKxSite Bathouse: Competition Entry
Orientated on the Western axis of the Milreu Fort, the proposition looks to accentuate the connection of the ruin with the Atlantic coast, integrating a 325m long datum stretching from the terrain surrounding the fort out into the coast. The processional route initially submerges visitors into the reception and changing rooms, before leading them to the central channel, moving visitors from the submersion of the cliff side, to the open expanse of the ocean. The two meet at the ruin, which acts as a transient passage from the ground to the ocean.
Rooms branching off to the side of the central channel provide the progressing climatic experience, gradually rising in temperature as you move towards the Atlantic Ocean. This movement from cold to warm is reflected through the lighting of the rooms controlled by the forms and openings within the spaces, apertures becoming brighter travelling towards the destination.”
